La Cala de Mijas is roughly about 33km along the Costa del Sol from Malaga airport and would about half an hour by car to reach. With La Cala de Mijas, it is more economical to hire a car, due to its reasonably remote location. That said it is only a short drive to either Calahonda or Elviria, where you will find plenty of places to shop and visit during your holiday. Numerous rental car agents operate from within the airport and also in many of the cities along the Costa del Sol. The main reason why it is not always advised to rent a car is due to the difficulty to find on-street parking in many towns, especially during the summer months. It can be a better option to get a taxi into the city on the first night and then rent a car by the day if you wish to go sightseeing in the surrounding areas, though the buses on the Costa del Sol are regular and travel to most places you may wish to visit.
