La Cala de Mijas History and Culture
Historical La Cala de Mijas

The Old and the New
La Cala de Mijas
La Cala de Mijas falls into the region of Mijas Costa. Located on the far coastal area, about 20 minutes drive from Mijas Pueblo. La Cala has become a tourist and commercial orientated destination. Many businesses have setup offices and shops in the town over the last ten years, making La Cala one of the fastest growing towns on the Costa del Sol.
Traces of civilisations as far back as the Greeks and Phoenicians have been discovered in the region of Mijas. However the origins of La Cala de Mijas are much more recent. And its development from a quaint Spanish fishing village to the central hub for tourism in Mijas Costa is one which dates back only about ten to fifteen years.
The bustling town of La Cala de Mijas is located in the centre of the Costa del Sol, only about ten minutes drive from Fuengirola and about 30 minutes from Malaga. La Cala has a multitude of pleasant, clean beaches and bars to entertain you. Some wonderful restaurants and fine dining can be had around the town or over looking the sea. Even though La Cala has developed into a hive of tourism, it has in no way lost any of its Spanish culture or heritage. In a way of contrast to other towns on the Costa del Sol, La Cala has developed a nice balance of culture, one in which neither, Spanish, Swedish, English or German, or in fact any other national culture is more apparent than the other.
Sport is one activity that is widely attributed to La Cala de Mijas. The Club del Sol tennis club and the Lawn bowls centre at Miraflores enjoy a busy life all year round. Gymnasiums, dive schools and a myriad of other outdoor activities are all within a short drive of the centre of La Cala. Not forgetting the fantastic La Cala, Mijas, Santana and El Chaparral golf courses. Non members are encouraged and welcomed, and all these courses offer tuition and equipment hire, not to mention the fantastic restaurants in the course grounds.

A Wonderful day out at the Hipodromo del Sol
There are also several horse related activities to be enjoyed. There are several locations in the La Cala hills to take a horse trekking trip, with professional guides, offering riding lessons as well for the less experienced rider. If horse trekking is not your favourite pastime, maybe you would prefer to watch the races at the fantastic Hipodromo del Sol. A short drive of about 15 minutes takes you to the course, located in the hills above La Cala de Mijas. With many days of racing a week and night time racing during the summer, it's a wonderful place to spend your time. Gourmet restaurants providing mouth watering food are available, as well as several nice bars.
The Costa del Sol remains a firm favourite with residents and tourists alike. The temperate climate here means you can actually enjoy four seasons a year. Combine that with where La Cala is located, in the centre of the Costa del Sol, with easy access to all amenities of surrounding towns, means you are perfectly placed to get the best out of the area.
